*Obituary

Lorene Wolters died peacefully on October 30, 2007 at Hearthstone Assisted Living in Texas City, Texas. Lorene was born at home in Calviness, Texas on August 18, 1915 and was the daughter of Buster and Bessie McDaniel. She was preceded in death by her three sisters Grace, Irene, and Ann. She was the wife of Richard Wolters who died in 2002, and mother of two sons, Richard Wolters, Jr. of San Jose, Ca. and Ron Wolters of Austin, Tex. Her grandchildren include Lelisa Lynne Rozendal, Melanie Ifft, Ryan Wolters, and Rachel Shelton; great-grandchildren are Sarah and Sam Ifft, Tanner and Tessa Rozendal, all of Oregon.

Before her marriage, Lorene attended Tulsa Business College and played on the school’s Stenos basketball team. The team captured three consecutive National AAU championships in 1934, 1935, and 1936. Then she went on to a pro career with the Star Dairy Girls’ basketball team of Galveston.

Lorene moved to Galveston County in 1937, and settled in La Marque in 1941. While her husband was overseas with the US Navy, Wolters received the Navy Mother award in 1944.

She was very active in her church, her community, and in her children’s lives. Her contributions to La Marque and the surrounding communities have been remarkable. Through fundraisers and contributions, Wolters helped build Bobby Beach Memorial Stadium on the west side of La Marque.

Although Wolters did not start bowling until she was 40, she excelled at the sport, winning many awards and accolades. She helped open the Alvin, La Porte and Texas City recreation bowling lanes. Wolters served as president in 1958-59 of the Texas City/ La Marque Women’s Bowling Association, and was delegate to state and national for many years.

Knitting was another passion. Lorene knitted close to 300 sweaters that she donated to her family and bowling friends. Very active in her sons’ education, Wolters was named a life member of the Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers in April 1959.

Lorene and Richard enjoyed many fishing trips in the adjoining bays and in the Gulf. At the Texas City Fishing Rodeo held each summer, someone in the family usually took home a trophy for the largest fish. Before limits were established on size or quantity, typical outings brought enough fish home for the entire neighborhood.

Throughout her life, Lorene blessed her children with her love, guidance, and faith in God. Despite her many successes, Lorene wanted to be “remembered for me, not just what I did.” She will be deeply missed by all in her loving circle of family and many friends. A private service has been held.
