Schwartz, Sylvia Sylvia Schmidt Massman Schwartz, 95, of Dallas passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at The Edgemere in Dallas. She will always be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and gracious friend to all that knew and loved her. She was born in Yorktown, Texas, on March 22, 1918 to Jacob and Bertha Yahr Schmidt. She graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Zoology. She reared her family in Beaumont, Texas, where she was President of the Temple Emanuel Sisterhood. After moving to Dallas she was active in the Temple Emanu-El Sisterhood and was an editor of its famous cookbook first published in 1965. She was a gifted painter whose works were sold by Dallas area galleries and are enjoyed by her family and many patrons. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold L. Schwartz, her parents, and her sisters, Lena Simon and Helen Bock. Survivors include her son, Richard Massman and wife Barbara of Dallas, TX; her son, Andrew Massman and wife Sandra of Austin, TX; her son, Kenneth Massman and wife Shirley of Chantilly, VA; her grandchildren, Jason Massman and wife Toby, Karen Rovinsky and husband Kyle, Brett Massman and wife Elizabeth, Lauren Massman, Micah Massman and wife Sarah, and Noah Massman; her great-grandchildren, Eli Massman, Hiram Rovinsky, Leo Rovinsky, and Meyer Rovinsky; her brother, Leon Schmidt and sister, Edythe Kruger, both of Austin, TX; and many wonderful nieces, nephews and cousins. A Funeral Service will be at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, December 17, 2013, at Sparkman/Hillcrest Chapel, 7405 W. Northwest Highway, Dallas, TX. In lieu of flowers Memorials may be made to Temple Emanu-El, 8500 Hillcrest, Dallas, TX 75225, or Retina Foundation of the Southwest (AMD research), 9600 N. Central Expwy., Dallas, TX 75231.
