Jack McClure
Roby, Texas

It is with profound sadness that the family of Jackson Jefferson "Jack" McClure announces his passing from this life to the next on Friday, July 4, 2008, Independence Day, at the age of 81.

A graveside service and celebration of Jack's life will be held Monday, July 7, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at the Roby Cemetery under the direction of Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home. Friends and family are welcome to attend the service. The First Baptist Church of Roby is hosting a luncheon for family members afterwards.

Jack was a caring, devoted family man, friend and a blessing to all who knew him.

He was born in Fisher County on April 24, 1927, to S. J. McClure and Lulu Belle (Keener) McClure, one of eight children. Jack was a true west Texas cowboy, who enjoyed his horses, farming and ranching. He knew the value of hard, honest work, a value he instilled in his children and five grandsons.

Like so many of his peers of the Greatest Generation, Jack was a veteran of World War II, assisting in the reconstruction of Germany from 1945-1946. He served as a Staff Sergeant and Instructor in the Signal Corps, responsible for an all African American Signal Battalion.

After the war, Jack attended college briefly in Portales, N.M., where he played football. He left Portales and followed the annual wheat harvest from Texas to South Dakota, where he met his wife of 56 years, Jeanne (Todd) McClure. Jack and Jeanne were married in Pierre, S.D., in 1952.

With his wife, Jeanne, Jack owned and operated McClure's Inc., a liquid fertilizer business in Roby. He also farmed cotton and raised cattle. More than 15 years ago, he and Jeanne began raising and breeding Paso Fino horses, a gentle Spanish horse with a smooth gait. They brought the breed to Fisher County.

Jack's mischievous sense of humor was enjoyed by all (or at least most) who knew him. He'll be missed dearly by his friends, many of whom gather daily at C. J. J's Automotive in Roby for coffee and day-old donuts. He loved playing 42 with his grandsons and was not above talking under the table.

His public service included many years as an elected member of the Roby I.S.D. School Board and the Roby City Council. For many years he sang in a quartet at the First Baptist Church of Roby. Jack was a tireless promoter of Fisher County and worked to encourage economic development for its residents. His optimism knew no bounds, and to the end he was working to promote the development of a "switch grass" ethanol plant in Fisher County.

Jack is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Jeanne. Their love for one another remains a source of great joy and inspiration for family and friends. He is also survived by his son, Jeff McClure and his wife, Darla, of Henrietta, daughter Jenna (McClure) Thompson and her husband, Ray, of Houston; and five grandsons, Chance and his wife, Amanda, Tate, Tyse, Chase and Trey.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Beverly and Cotton Rister, Sally Etheridge, Edith McCain, Penny Kiser, and the Fisher County Sheriff's Department and the Fisher County Hospital in our time of need. The family also thanks all the wonderful people who have called and stopped by to offer their love and support.
