MRS. VALTER WHITE IS NAMED SHERIFF

SUCCEEDS HUSBAND WHO REPORTS TO THE ARMY

Mrs. Sarah White was named Sheriff for Milam county at a meeting of the Commissioners' Court at 2 p. m. Friday.
Mrs. White succeeds her husband who is reporting to the United States Army on Monday, January 11.
Appointment of Mrs. White was made from three applicants: W. C. Colvin, former Constable at Rockdale, was an applicant and Connie Lawson of Thorndale also applied.
Colvin received the vote of his commissioner, Mr. McGuyer at Rockdale and Mr. Lawson received the vote of his Commissioner, Mr. Stiles at Thorndale.
Judge Kemp cast a ballot along with Commissioner Stidham and Commissioner Kuzel of Buckholts. All voted for Mrs. White.
Valter White was elected sheriff in November and took the oath of office on January 1st, three days before he reported for induction.
Mrs. White is the first woman in the history of Milam county to hold the office of Sheriff. Before her marriage she was Miss Sarah Harlan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. V. Harlan of Branchville. She was married to Sheriff White following his election to the office in 1940.
Mrs. White has accepted her new responsibilities with determination to discharge the duties of the office as was done by her husband who made a fine record in his first term and was entering upon his second term when the nation called him to the armed service.
The office of the Sheriff has been reorganized to some extent by the resignation of LeRoy Massengale who was the Office Deputy. He has been succeeded by Will Vaughn,a former Deputy Sheriff and an experienced officer.
Carl Black who was chief deputy under Sheriff Valter White will retain his post. Mr. Black will have much of the responsibility of the former Sheriff who goes to the army and the work of the Sheriff will go forward uninterrupted. Mr. Black as Chief Deputy Sheriff has rendered valuable service to the office and to the people.
Early Saturday former Sheriff Valter White who will soon be Private Valter White, U. S. Army said:
"I wish to express my deepest appreciation to the people of Milam county for their confidence in electing me to a second term in the office of Sheriff. I am entirely satisfied with my successors in office and I know the people will have the advantage of good officers and I leave the office in good hands.
"I am a soldier in the army of the United States, called to do my share in the war. I am happy to be able to contribute what is in my power to winning the war and I hope to come back to my home and to my friends when it is all over.
"The people have been most generous in their co-operation and it has been a pleasure to serve as sheriff these two years. To each one I send my thanks and best wishes. May every good fortune be yours until we meet again."
Mr. White said he had closed out all his business affairs and was ready Saturday to take the bus to the induction station at San Antonio. Before coming to the Sheriff's office Mr. White was a farmer and stockman in the Maysfield community where he was born and reared.
He still retains his interests there where his mother and two small children, and nieces of the former sheriff, have had his constant care and support.
Mr. White was popular with the people and his record as Sheriff was one of the best within the history of the county. The hearts of his friends will go with him to the army and the well wishes of all will look confidently to his return.
