Jo Layne Sumpter, 88, passed away Monday, October 26, 2015 in Borger, Texas.
Mrs. Sumpter was born October 21, 1927 in Guymon, Oklahoma to Claude H. and Edith (Reeves) Allen. Miles E. Sumpter and Jo Layne Allen were married on January 1, 1947 in Perryton, Texas. They were married over 50 years.
When she was a small child, her parents moved to Perryton to start Allen Tire. She and her brother, JuJu, loved to play on the tires. She lived through the Depression, wearing flour sack dresses her mother made. Graduating from Perryton High School in 1945, she left to attend a Business School in Fort Worth but soon returned to Perryton and married "that cute looking guy", Miles. The family then moved to Borger and Miles went to work for Phillips Petroleum. The family settled into their house at 215 Kiekbusch.
Mrs. Sumpter was a member of the First Christian Church, she was a Cub Scout and Brownie leader. In the 1980's she and Miles became involved with the Walk To Emmaus. She took seriously being a wife and mother, and, as her children say "she was".
She is preceded in death by her husband, Miles; a brother, Claude Allen, Jr. and a grand-daughter Wendy.
She is survived by one daughter, Lynn Sumpter Armet and her late husband Ashton of Monroe, LA ; 3 sons: Larry M. Sumpter and wife Pam of Bastrop, Texas, Donald A. Sumpter and wife Denise of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, Thomas J. Sumpter and wife Lynn of Borger; a nephew, Rodger Allen of Stratford, Texas; 16 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
A Celebration Of Life Service will be held Friday, October 30, 2015 at 10:30 am at the First Christian Church, Monroe and Hedgecoke. Burial will follow at Westlawn Cemetery, Borger.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Emmaus Foundation, 1908 Grand Ave. PO Box 340004 , Nashville, TN..37203-0004.
