*Obituary

Dorothy Catherine Cain McDonald, departed this life and entered into eternal peace on Sunday, September 9th, 2007 at the Edgewater Retirement Community, Turner Geriatric Center, just one day before her 94th birthday.

Dorothy, the youngest of five children, she was born in Waco, Texas on September 10th, 1913, daughter of the late Harry Cain, Sr. of Liverpool, England and Catherine Alice Honea of Paris, Texas. She spent her childhood and young adult years in Waco, Texas. Upon graduating from Waco High School in 1931, she moved to Galveston, Texas to live with relatives and find employment.

In 1934, Dorothy was united in marriage with Lee McDonald, son of Judge D.D. McDonald, a Galveston attorney, and Elva Lemoine McDonald. The couple made their home in Galveston's east end at 614 10th St. and 926 Winnie, and in time were blessed with three daughters.

Dorothy was a loving mother and devoted wife of 61 years, always giving unstintingly of herself to insure the happiness and well-being of her husband and children. After many years of domestic contentment, at age 45, she chose to return to the work place as a medical records clerk at St. Mary's Hospital in Galveston, Texas where she remained from 1958 until 1973.

Having been baptized in the Methodist faith in 1925, Dorothy was a life-long member of the First Methodist Church in Galveston, and later the Moody Memorial First United Methodist Church. She kept with her at all times her family bible with many favorite passages underlined, and for daily inspiration, her copy of "The Upper Room".

Following the loss of her beloved husband, Lee, Dorothy moved to the Edgewater Retirement Community where she was to become a resident for seven years. During this time, she made many friends among the residents and staff and participated regularly in the Residents' Committee and auxilary meetings. Others remember her as frequently offering a helping hand to those less able, and her personal notes of concern and encouragement to those ailing were a source of comfort to many, even though she, herself, then at an advanced age often struggled to remain well and independent even up to the end of her life.

Dorothy was survived by three daughters, Dorothy L. (and her husband, Alex) Karilanovic, Mary McDonald Ellison, and Kathryn Taubert; one granddaughter, Amy Ellison (and her husband, Rob) Wohrer; one great-grandson Angus; a former son-in-law, Judson Heartsill; numerous nieces and nephews in Galveston and throughout the States; and a host of other family and friends who mourn her passing.

A memorial tribute to Dorothy was held on Wednesday, September 12th, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel at the Edgewater Retirement Community, with Reverend Charles Bagley officiating.

Graveside services were held on Wednesday, September 12th, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at the Hayes Grace Memorial Park Cemetery in Hitchcock, Texas.
