TEXAS CITY — James Wesley "Wes" Hughes, 75, passed from this life Wednesday, June 22, 2005, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was born March 12, 1930, and was a lifelong resident of Texas City.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Margaret Butler Hughes; his sons, David W. Hughes and wife Sharon of Metarie, Louisiana, Darryl K. Hughes of Houston; and daughter Denise Hughes Galletti and husband Andrew, Jr.; sisters, Louise Hughes Miller and husband Lynn of Texas City and Vivian Hughes Scott of Jasper; grandson, Joel Morris and wife Ruthie and great-grandson Jimmy; and granddaughter, Jessica Morris, all of Houston. Also, stepson Ron Dysart and fiancée Glynda Morgan; and stepdaughter Debbie Fontenot and husband Gary of Texas City; an aunt, nephews, nieces, cousins and countless friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Wm. Fred Hughes (who died in the Texas City Disaster); and his mother, Mae Hughes Bean; brother, Harold Bruce Hughes; wife Patricia Smart Hughes; and grandson, James Travis Morris.

Graduating from Central High and the University of Houston, Wes was first a teacher-coach and later a leadman carpenter, when he retired after more than 30 years at Monsanto Chemical. Committed to the best interests of the community, he coached youth baseball, was a Cub Scout leader, and helped to build Habitats for Humanity. Wes was a dedicated member of the First Christian Church and actively served as elder, board/council member, Sunday school teacher, prayer partner for children, Keenager and bell choir ringer. He played an integral role in the actual construction of the church's present sanctuary.

Wes will be remembered as a Christian, who loved his church, a dedicated and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and a caring friend to many, and his joy will forever linger in the hearts of all those who knew and loved him.

Visitation will be Friday, June 24, 2005, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., at the First Christian Church in Texas City. The funeral service will be held at the First Christian Church, Saturday, June 25, 2005, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Terrye Williams officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the James Crowder Funeral Home in La Marque.

Pallbearers are Gary Fontenot, Fred Miller, Andrew Gallett, Jr., Ron Dysart, Clay Scott and Kyle Scott. Honorary pallbearers will be the elders of the church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society; the American Diabetes Foundation; or the charity of choice.
