James Afton Boydstun was born Thursday, July 24, 1919 in Peacock, Texas to John Thomas and Carrie Arizona (Noonkester) Boydstun. He passed away Sunday morning, March 13, 2011 at the Ralls Nursing Home.
The Boydstun family moved to the plains in 1924 and James went to school at Cone and Ralls. Ralls High School was then located where the swimming pool is now.
James married Nola Olive Creed November 30, 1939 in the Farmer Community near Ralls.
James had careers in trucking, farming, ginning, ranching and county commissioner, but his first loved was as a working cowboy. He served as Rodeo Chairman or Boss of Ralls Rodeo for a total of 40 years. He was the manager of the Ralls Polo Club which won the World Championship in 1966. A member of the Ralls First Baptist Church, James served on the school boards at Farmer and Ralls for 12 years, the county FHA finance board for four years and was a founding board member of the Crosby County Fuel Association. He was also active in the 4H Clubs in Crosby County. James was a charter member and board member of the Open Heart Club founded in 1973 in Lubbock.
He is preceded in death by an infant son, both parents and five siblings.
Survivors include his wife, Olive Boydstun of Ralls, two sons and their wives, Jim and Linda Boydstun of Ralls and Don and Carolyn Boydstun of Tuscola, one brother, Leland Boydstun of Floresville, one sister, Dorothy Waythe of Quitman, four grandchildren, Tana and Doug Arrant of Spring, Chree Boydstun of Houston, Jayson and Kryste Boydstun of Christoval and Justin and Kirstie Boydstun of Lubbock and five great grandchildren, Allison Arrant, Saylor Boydstun, Ryan Boydstun, Wylliam Boydstun and Kambree Boydstun.
Services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at the Ralls First Baptist Church with Rev. Floyd Haddock and Rev. T. J. Messer officiating. Burial will follow in the Ralls Cemetery under direction of Adams Funeral Home.
The family suggests memorials to the Ralls First Baptist Church, Box 667, Ralls, Tx 79357.
