Veteran peace officer Ben James Garrett, 78, died at 8:10 am today in North Plains Hospital. The former Borger Police Captain retired as Justice of the Peace, Precinct 2, Place 2 on January 1, 1963, after holding that post for eight years.

Garrett resided in Borger 22 years. He moved here from Hollis, Okla in 1943 to accept a position as night chief in the city police department.

Three years later he was promoted to assistant chief of police. He was named police captain after four years, and served in that position for three years before announcing his candidacy for a local justice of the peace post.

Born April 5, 1884, in Hopeful, Ala, Garrett was brought to Texas by his parents and he was reared in Sulphur Springs. He served as deputy sheriff of Hopkins County for four years when he was 24.

He had been a member of the Church of Christ of Sulphur Springs for 61 years.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 pm in the Gateway Church of Christ with Rev Charles Hill, pastor, officiating. Rev Leonard Forsythe of Bible Baptist Church will assist.

Interment will be in Highland Park Cemetery.

Garrett is survived by his widow, Lizzie May of the home, 301 E Ninth; four daughters, Mrs Morris Mitchell, Mrs D E Warren, Mrs Ray Patrick, Borger, and Mrs Frank Price of Sulphur Springs; seven sons, Buddy and L B of Hollis, G W of Denver City, June, Bill, Jack and Dean of Borger.

Also two brothers, Ace and Lee of Commerce; a sister, Mrs Ila Sanders of Lubbock, 32 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Casketbearers will be Dean Friend, Ambrose Caufield, Mose Wigginton, J B Hunt, Claudie West and A W Wylie.

Honorary pallbearers will be George Finger, Bob Johnson, E C Snider, J D Miller, Hugh Anderson, A A Meredith, Jackie Hughes and Bob Bradshaw, J A Bell and Dr Harvey Hays.

Funeral services for Mrs. Lizzie Mae Garrett, 85, of 301 E. Ninth, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday from Johnson Park Church of Christ with Gary Dennis, minister, officiating.

Burial will follow in Highland Park Cemetery under the direction of Minton Mortuary.

Mrs. Garrett, a resident of Borger since 1943, died at 4:50 a.m. today at her home.

She was born Sept. 8, 1887 in Florence, Ala. Her husband, Ben, preceded her in death on Feb. 12, 1963.

Survivors include seven sons, June, Bill and Dean of Borger, G. W. of Denver City, Jack of Houston, Buddy and L.B. of Hollis, Okla.; four daughters, Mrs. Altha Mitchell and Mrs. Kim Neeper of Borger, Mrs. Christine Darnell of Long Beach, Calif., Mrs. Frank Price of Sulphur Springs.

Two sisters, Mrs. Kate Pickett of Dallas and Mrs. Emer Linley of Cumby; 37 grandchildren, 95 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Casket bearers will be the men of Johnson Park Church of Christ.
