HUTCHINSON COUNTY HERALD - December 16, 1949

Final rites for Joe M. Haidy, 61, native of Syria and pioneer Borger merchant, who died in a local hospital Monday following a lingering illness, were held in the First Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Burial followed in Highland Park cemetery under the direction of Minton Funeral Home.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Frank Haidy of Cleveland, Ohio, and four daughters. They are: Mrs. J. E. Jackson, Skellytown; Mrs. K. V. Spencer, Borger; Mrs. Katherine Crowell, Odessa; and Mrs. Mary Cabool, O'Donnell, Texas.

Haidy with his family moved to Borger in June of 1926 and had engaged in the grocery business here since that time.

In 1945 he applied for a passport so he could again visit the place of his birth and childhood. The passport came through in 1946 along with some hard luck. He was in an auto accident on the Borger-Skellytown highway in June of that year from which he never completely recovered.

If he had it is doubtful that he would ever have seen his native land for he wore dark glasses as a result of the accident. His eyes were bleary and he could barely distinguish day from night.

He was obliged to retire following the accident and only on rare occasions did he "drop in" on his place of business.
