BORGER NEWS HERALD - December 23, 1994

Judge Homer L. Moss, 91, longtime Borger attorney, died Thursday in High Plains Baptist Hospital in Amarillo.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church Chapel with the Rev. Gregg Simmons, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery by Brown Funeral Directors.

A 41-year Borger resident, Mr. Moss was Hutchinson County Law Librarian at the time of his death. He was born Jan. 4, 1903 in Frankston to Dr. George H. Moss and Mae Atkinson Moss, pioneer Anderson County families.

He attended school in Frankston and graduated from Electra High School in 1923. He attended Rusk County College and Baylor University, receiving a bachelor of arts degree in 1929 and legum baccalaureus bachelor of law degree in 1931. He was admitted to the Texas Bar Association.

After attending the State Bar in 1931, he received a license to practice law June 12, 1931, and commenced law practice in Frankston. He moved to Wheeler County in 1933, engaging in law practice in Shamrock and Wheeler County before settling in Borger in 1953.

Moss was a part-time Wheeler County Attorney for 16 years, Borger City Judge for 13 years, an assistant Hutchinson County Attorney for 6 years, and was a Justice of the Peace in Borger.

Homer Moss also worked three years as a civilian attorney at the Air Force Base in Amarillo, and Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska.

Moss was among state attorneys honored for 50 years in the profession on July 3, 1981 by the Texas Bar Association in Houston.

Homer Moss was a familiar figure in the community as he was seen riding his bicycle around town. While he was still practicing law in Borger, he commented that he was the only person who regularly rode a bicycle to work.

In a 1981 interview with the Borger News-Herald, at the age of 78, Moss related that he rode the bicycle for health reasons, recreation and transportation.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Kiwanis Club, and the Odd Fellows. He had a keen interest in anything related to railroads, and had a collection of memorabilia, antiques, and pictures that were depicted in the office where he worked for so many years.

Moss is survived by his wife, Ida Mae "Dolly"; three sons, Tommy Moss of Amarillo; Terry Moss of Borger; and Stewart Moss of Del Rio; three grandsons; and two great-grandsons.

The family requests memorials be made to a favorite charity.
