16th Missouri Infantry
Civil War Confederate
March 1, 1847 - February 15, 1938

Francis Marion Childress was born on March 1, 1847 to Abram Childress and Nancy Juda Anderson in Alabama. He is the brother of 8 known siblings.

Mr. Childress joined the Confederate Army when the Civil War broke out. His residence was in Missouri at the time. He joined the 16th Missouri Infantry.
The 16th Missouri Infantry was a Confederate regiment organized in August of 1862 as the 7th Missouri Infantry; it was redesignated the 16th Missouri Infantry in January of 1864. The 16th fought in the battles of Lone Jack, Prairie Grove, and Helena, and surrendered on May 26, 1865. More men died while serving in the 16th Missouri Infantry Regiment than died in any other Missouri unit serving in the Confederate States Army.

In 1867, he married Miss Mollie Holley and they had 14 known children. She preceded him in death by 18 years. Records show he never remarried.

When the war ended in 1871, he moved to Boxelder, Red River County, Texas.

On March 7, 1935, from Red River County, he was admitted to the Confederate Men's Home in Austin, Travis County, Texas and stayed there until his death on February 15, 1938 at the age of 90.

He received the Southern Cross of Honor on his marker.
