In 1918 Elmer moved with the family to Roswell, New Mexico. He rented an irrigated farm and farmed for the next ten years.
On March 4, 1929, Elmer married a rancher's daughter, Bertha Taylor. The same year they moved to Hemet, Riverside County, California. In July 1930 the family moved to Tokio, Texas. In 1931, Elmer began farming and ranching and was active doing this until his death.
