BORGER (AP) - Claude E. Ruby, 56, died early today of wounds suffered in a shooting at a tavern north of here Tuesday night.
W.H. Bates, 76, police chief here in the early 1930s, was killed instantly during the gunplay.
Bates ran the tavern. Ruby operated a wholesale beer business. Both man had known each other since they came to Borger in 1926, the year the city was founded.
Sheriff Hugh Anderson said the argument resulted from unsettled debts between the two men.

Funeral services for Evelyn G. Ruby, 93, 513 Crockett Street, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Brown's Chapel of the Fountains with Elders Randy Diamond and Youel Knutson, of the Reorganized Church of Latter-Day Saints, officiating.
Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery under the direction of Ed Brown & Sons Funeral Home.
Survivors include two sisters, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude E. Ruby in 1953.
