PADUCAH - Juanita Mae Whitaker, 80, passed away Sunday, Nov. 5, 2006, at a Plano, Texas, hospital. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church of Paducah with Jerry McClendon officiating. Interment followed in Paducah's Garden of Memories Cemetery under the direction of Seigler Funeral Home. Family visitation was held from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Juanita was born Feb. 6, 1926, in Cottle County to James William Gibbs and Annie Laura (Shirley) Gibbs. She graduated high school in Paducah and attended Texas Tech for three years. She married Weldon Whitaker in Paducah on March 15, 1947. Juanita and Weldon moved away for several years and she worked as bookkeeper, teller, and cashier for 17 years at City National Bank of Plainview. She returned to Paducah in 1975 and completed her 33-year banking career with First National Bank of Paducah. Juanita was a very active member of her community. She was a member of the Baptist church; Order of the Eastern Star for 60 years and held multiple offices; VFW Ladies Auxiliary; the Lubbock Chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy; and the secretary/treasurer of the Paducah Cemetery Association from 1996-2006. In her spare time, Juanita loved to practice the art and science of genealogy.
Juanita was preceded in death by her brother, James William Gibbs Jr.
Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Weldon Whitaker; one son, Kerry Wayne Whitaker of Plano; one sister, Anna Lee Woodley of Paducah; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
