Mrs. J.R. Edwards, of near Briscoe, died Saturday at the Wheeler hospital from dust pneumonia. She had been ill only nine days, although she had been in ill health for several years.
Matilda Jane Crouse was born July 10, 1868, in Sparta, N.C., and died April 27, 1935, at Wheeler, Texas, at the age of 66 years, nine months and 17 days.
She moved to Wheeler county in 1905 from their home in Alleghany county, N. Carolina. She was a member of the Primitive Baptist church at Briscoe, where she remained active until death.
She was the mother of 10 children, six of whom survive. They are Mrs. Mattie Atherton, Briscoe, Guin Edwards, Forrest Hill, Md.; Letcher Edwards, Quanah; Roy Edwards, Gageby; Mrs. Pearl Williams, Briscoe, and Robert Edwards, living with the father, J.R. Edwards, at Bend, Ore. Other survivers [sic] are one sister and two brothers, Mrs. Effie Shoemake [sic], John and Tyre Crouse, all of Sparta, N.C., 12 grandchildren and a host of friends.
Funeral services were conducted at the Wheeler Baptist church Sunday afternoon by Rev. Sims, pastor of the Primitive Baptist church of Mobeetie, with burial in the Wheeler cemetery, in charge of the Clay-Beasley Funeral Home.
The honorary pallbearers were Mesdames J.F. Witt, W.M. Hampton, Sallie Cunningham, W.N. Pace, Minnie Farmer, C.H. Clay, Lee McCasland, Scott Helton, G.W. Porter, J.M. Porter, Lack Clay, M.L. Gunter, J.D. Williams, Witt Aderholt and Wood of Briscoe.
The active pallbearers were J.L. Maloy, W.N. Pace, A.B. Evans, John Zybach, Mr. Witt and Mrs. Aderholt.
