Thelma A. Alexander, 83, longtime Hereford resident died Monday, March 24, 2014, at BSA Hospice in Amarillo, Texas, with her family at her bedside.
A Celebration of Life service is scheduled for 10:00 am, Friday, March 28, 2014, at First United Methodist Church. Rev. Kevin Bushart, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in West Park Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Hereford Heritage Funeral Home, 411 E 6th Street.
Thelma was born December 12, 1930 in Hereford, Texas, to Howard and Mary (Clayton) Hershey. She married her best friend and the love of her life, Dempsey Alexander, on October 26, 1951, in Dimmitt. Thelma was a Methodist by faith and loved her Lord and Savior. Thelma graduated from West Texas State University. She sponsored cheerleading teams, was a member of the Texas State Teachers Retirement, Texas Retired Teachers Association and Delta Kappa Gamma. Thelma taught school for 28 years. She was the 1982 Hereford Teacher of the Year at West Central School. Thelma was an avid Sudoku player, she liked to read, she liked to dance occasionally, go boating, fishing, going to Wise County to the Alexander property, cooking, baking, gardening, and traveling to Gunnison, Colorado, which she did for 21 years straight. Thelma also liked family gatherings, Friday night football and having family and friends over to her home for refreshments and snacks following the Friday night Hereford high school home football games.
Thelma was preceded in death by her parents; 1 grandson and 1 brother.
Survivors include her husband, Dempsey Alexander of 62 years; 3 sons, Rocky Alexander and wife Rene of Tomball, TX, Randy Alexander and wife MaryAnn of Lubbock, Rowan Alexander and wife Barbara of Grand Rapids, MI; 2 sisters, her twin sister, Zelma Sorgenfrei of Conroe, TX, Laoma Ivy of Amarillo; 1 brother, Elmer Hershey and wife Hazel of Houston; ; 10 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family suggests memorial to the First United Methodist Church, 501 N. Main Street, Hereford, Texas, 79045 or BSA Hospice, P.O. Box 950, Amarillo, Texas 79105.
