Services for Clay (Pappy) Oats, 84, of Slaton will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Franklin-Bartley Chapel with James Gordon officiating. Masonic graveside services will follow in Englewood Cemetery. He died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003, at Covenant Medical Center. He was born Sept. 28, 1918, in Charleston and was raised in Delta County. He married Martha Pauline Simpson on Sept. 28, 1938, in Lake Creek. She died Feb. 14, 2000. He had farmed in Lubbock County since 1955. A Mason for over 50 years, he was a member of Slaton Lodge #951. He was a member of the Cooper United Methodist Church. Survivors include two sons, Clay Neal Oats of Slaton and Jerry Lee Oats of Ransom Canyon; a brother, J.P. Oats Jr. of Pensacola, Fla.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
