Mary Grace Privett, 94, of Slaton, Texas passed away on September 10, 2011.

She was the eldest of seven children born to Thomas Ragan Reed and Mary Areta Parish in Van Alstyne, Texas on February 15, 1917. The young family moved to Slaton in 1919 to join other Reed siblings who were farming in the area. Her family's early years in Slaton were filled with hardship: failed crops, poverty, illness and the death of an infant child.

Mary Grace grew up through the depression era in Slaton, graduating from Slaton High School in 1936. Shortly thereafter, her mother, Mary Areta died of cancer, leaving her, her father & older siblings to care for the younger children.

She married George Wilson Privett, from Southland on Nov 1, 1938. He was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad early in their marriage and worked as a brakeman & conductor until his retirement in 1978. Upon his retirement, Mary Grace and G.W. traveled extensively around the U.S and enjoyed two cruises to Alaska and the Panama Canal. They also traveled to destinations abroad including Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa.

G.W. preceded Mary Grace in death on May 2, 2001. In recent years, she spent several extended holidays in Kentucky with her son and daughter-in-law, where she made many new friends.

Mary Grace was a devoted wife, loving mother and involved civic leader. She was a life-long member of the Slaton First Baptist Church, and over the years she gave committed service to her Sunday School Class, the P.T.A., Daughters of the Pioneers, Athenian Study Club, Eastern Star, Women's Chamber of Commerce, United Trainmen's Auxiliary, Slaton Museum Association, Railroad Heritage Association, Senior Citizens Center, & Wally Byam Travel Club. She was named Woman of the Year by the Slaton Chamber of Commerce in 1980.

Mary Grace loved sewing for herself and others. She was honored by the Slaton Senior Citizens Center as their nominee for the 2000 Mrs. Senior Texas pageant in Abilene, where she modeled a western denim outfit she made.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Dr. George W. Privett, Jr. & Nawanna of Lexington, KY, Areta Privett Williams of Colombo, Sri Lanka, and Tony & Judy Privett of Lubbock; her youngest brother and sister-in-law, Jim & Jean Reed of Brownfield, nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Mary Grace was known by family and friends as a kind, generous & courageous woman. She will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her extended world-wide family.
