Mary Alice Bomar Edwards, 95, died Saturday, March 5, 2016, in Lubbock.

Celebration of life services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in First Baptist Church in Hereford with the Rev. Kyle Streun officiating.

She was born Feb. 24, 1921, in Gadsden, Ala., to Rachel and Joseph Whorton. She attended school in House, N.M., where she met Virgil Anson Bomar. Mary Alice married Virgil on Jan. 7, 1939, in Clovis, N.M.

Mary and Virgil had their two sons in New Mexico and later moved to Hereford, where Virgil ran several gas stations and Mary worked for Helen’s and Little’s clothing stores. They were members of First Baptist Church. After Virgil’s death in 1978, she met Calvin Edwards. They married in 1979 and were married until his death in 1993.

She loved nice clothing and was never seen without her high heels. She worked the Festival of Trees at the senior citizens center for many years and was an active member of Pilot Club. She received many awards doing what she loved. Mary enjoyed dancing and playing dominoes at the senior citizens center. She also treasured her special friendship with Don McNeese.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Stella Whorton, Ella Howell and Leecy Lott; and two brothers, Tom Whorton and Clyde Whorton.

Survivors include two sons, Don Bomar and wife Glenna of Smithville and Wayne Bomar and wife Jodie of Cleburne; six grandchildren, Brenda Galloway and husband Bob of Frisco, Crystal Dockery of Hunt, Jo Dawn Bomar of Smithville, and Dusty Bomar and wife Kym, Rob Bomar and wife Shannon and Sam Bomar, all of Cleburne; 13 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty Upton of Melrose, N.M.; and a brother, Rusty Whorton and wife Jeanne of Temple.

The family wishes to extend a sincere appreciation to the nurses and caregivers of Bender Terrace Alzheimer’s and Dementia Unit in Lubbock for their years of care.

The family suggests memorials be to Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org.

The family will greet guests immediately following the service.
