HEREFORD - Jimmie Cates, 83, died Tuesday, March 17, 2009, in Amarillo.

Celebration of life services will be at 2 p.m. today in Hereford Heritage Funeral Home Chapel of Memories. Burial will be in West Park Cemetery with military honors by the Hereford High School Marine Corps JROTC, commanded by retired Marine Corps Maj. Diego Barela.

Mr. Cates was born Feb. 28, 1926, in Grady, Okla., to Grady Jefferson and Hattie Boswell Cates. He married Doris Jean Elliott Cates on Dec. 13, 1951, in Oklahoma City.

Survivors include a son, Larry Cates; two brothers, Sammie Cates of Mangum, Okla., and Grady Cates Jr. of Canyon; five sisters, Minnie Elliott, Geneva Eastep and Shirley Buck, all of Hereford, Mildred Shirey of Grand Prairie and Mary Ann Fivecoat of Boise, Idaho; and three granddaughters.

The family suggests memorials to the Thomas E. Creek Veterans Administration Healthcare System Hospice, 6010 W. Amarillo Blvd., Amarillo, TX 79106.
