Funeral services for Mrs. Emma Virgie Clayton, 69, former operator of the Hereford Hotel, are scheduled to be held in the First Baptist church at 3 o'clock this afternoon with Rev. Howard Scott, pastor, officiating. She died late Friday afternoon at her home on Miles Avenue after an illness of more than a year.
Mrs. Clayton, who is the mother of Mrs. Marion T. Rutter of Hereford, operated the Hereford Hotel from 1935 until 1941. At the time of her death Mrs. Clayton was operating an apartment house.
Born Jan. 22, 1884 in Eastaboga, Ala., she moved to Texas with her family while still young. She was 24 when she married J.J. Clayton at Granbury on October 11, 1908.
In 1933 Mrs. Clayton moved to Deaf Smith County from Burkburnett, and began operation of the Hereford Hotel in 1935, continuing with this work until 1941.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Mary Hershey of Dimmitt, Mrs. Rutter, and Mrs. Raymond Stafford of Mora, N.M.; one son, J.D. Clayton of Conroe; one brother, M.L. Davis of Lubbock; two sisters, Mrs. Ola Barton of Fort Worth and Mrs. H.C. Hoyle of Plainview; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Burial will be in West Park Cemetery. Gililland Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
Pallbearers are: Clayton Woolery, G.P. Owens, Bill Patton, Nolle Elliston, E.O. Sprinkler and R.A. Daniels.
