W.M. Cogdell, 44-Year Resident
W.M. Cogdell, 86 years old and one of the earliest residents of Hereford, died at his home here last Thursday night following a long illness.
Mr. Cogdell, who came to Hereford in 1900 and operated one of the first stores in the new town, had taken an active part in business, civic and religious activities of the community during his long residence. He served as county clerk for four years, beginning in 1908; and after his retirement from the office engaged in the hotel business for many years until failing health forced him to retire from active business life. He was a charter member of the Hereford Presbyterian Church and had served faithfully in many phases of church activities.
Born Mar. 12, 1858 in North Carolina, Mr. Cogdell came to Texas in 1870. He was married to Lizzie B. Carpenter in 1890 at Wichita Falls; and survivors besides his wife include three sons, C.B. and W.B. of Hereford, and Lt. Frank M. Cogdell of the Santa Ana (Calif.) Army Air Base, and a granddaughter, Mickey Cogdell of Abilene.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Presbyterian church, with Rev. James Aiken Jr., and Rev. J.R. Sharp of Canyon, a former pastor of the local church, officiating.
Interment was at West Park Cemetery.
