George Dent, Another Pioneer, Passes Away

George Warren Dent, Hereford's veteran bee keeper, trapper, fisherman and hunter passed away about 4:45 o'clock Wednesday morning, January 23, after an illness of about a week. He had been in poor health for over two years and had often told his friends that he knew his time was near. He was sixty-five years of age.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. E.B. Bowen. Pallbearers were G.A. F. Parker, Geo. L. Muse, J.O. Newell, N.E. Gass, Carl Mountz and Otho Beene.

Mr. Dent came to Amarillo about forty years ago, soon after that town was located. There he did hauling for Smith, Walker & Co., and had many friends among the old Plains pioneers. He had lived in Hereford for more than twenty-five years, where he ran a delivery wagon and was the bee man of the city. He had a large number of stands of bees, both here and at Canyon, and sold honey to the local merchants.

These things he did for the needful money with which to pay expenses, but his delight in life was fishing, hunting and trapping, in all of them an expert. He taught many a small boy, and many larger boys, the mysteries of the fields and stream. His wife died here some years ago and for some time he has lived either alone of [sic] with a small grandson,, who was with him at the last.

He leaves a daughter; two sons and several grand children. His son, Joe Dent, is a Santa Fe train dispatcher at Amarillo, and has been here for the past week looking after his father and doing all that could be done for the aged sufferer.

George Dent was a kindly, friendly man, who numbered his friends among the rich and the poor alike. He was a lover of nature, a philosopher in his way, an institution in Hereford. He leaves many friends who will miss him sadly.
