Wilma Joyce George, 91, of Slaton, Texas passed away March 5, 2022.

Joyce was born June 15, 1930, to John and Mary Wilhoit at the family home in Hood County, Tx. At a young age her parents packed up their family moving to New Mexico to begin a new life farming to provide for their large family. Joyce loved telling how her grandparents whispered to her as they were leaving that they put her cat in the vehicle for her. In 1948 Joyce met Wj George at the cafe where she worked. September 4, 1948 they were married in the home of Fred Makinzie. In January 1949 they moved to Seminole where they started and raised their family. In October 1952 they moved to 411 SW 11th street. In August 1960 they built George's 7-11 grocery store in the front yard of the home they owned & operated for 18 years. Upon their retirement they enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. seeing sites and visiting family. In June 1986 they moved to Ruidoso Downs NM, leaving in 2000 to Slaton Tx in their later years of life.

Her last 2 years Joyce lived in Abilene with family.

Loved ones include daughter Linda (Bob) Smith of Slaton; daughter Brinda (Floyd) Currey of Dangerfield; daughter Nelda (Forest) Metcalf of Roswell; daughter Janice Bramley of Andrews; daughter Dona (Denny) Busbea of Lubbock; daughter Vida (Greg) Reddell of Abilene; son William George of Loco, Ok.; nine grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; two brothers Lynn & Glynn Wilhoit of Portales; three sisters Frances Alexander of Roswell NM, Blanche Hudson of Portales NM, & Jo Gibbs of Lone Oak, Tx.

Preceded in death by Wj George (husband), John & Mary Wilhoit (Parents), Anthony Kupiec (son-in-law), William John Martin (great grandchild), four brothers, E.B., Lowel, Billy Wayne, & Ray Wilhoit, five sisters, Rosalee Wilhoit, Maxene Pierce, Imogene Marshall, LuWanda & Bobbie Wilhoit.
Visitation will be at Sanders Funeral Home Thursday, March 10, 2022, 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A celebration of her life will be 10:00 AM Friday, March 11, 2022, in Sanders Memorial Chapel with Jimmy & Dennis Wilhoit officiating. Graveside services will follow at 3:00 PM in Gaines County Memorial Cemetery. Please celebrate the life of Joyce by visiting www.sandersfuneralhome.com.
