James M. "Jimmie" Gillentine, 85, a former owner of The Herford Brand, died Saturday, July 10, 1993 in Dallas. Early in his distinguished newspaper career he was the managing editor of The Wellington Leader under Deskins Wells, editor and publisher. Mr. Gillentine moved to Hereford in 1937 from Wellington to become editor of The Hereford Brand. Later he became a partner in the newspapaer and later its sole owner. He was one of the first early publishers to change to offset printing and became Southwest in Hereford during the 1950s. He moved the plant to Amarillo, where he printed a large number of Panhandle newspapers. Later he opened a printing plant in Dallas. In this plant he printed the Baptist Standard and the state publication of the Electric Co-operatives of Texas.
While he was with The Wellington Leader, he assisted in the publication of the award winning 1934 Silver Anniversary Edition of the newspaper. This edition won both state and national honors. He continued to receive honors for his newspaper after he moved to Hereford receiving most of the major honors at the regional and state level. The newspaper received many awards under his leadership. He sold The Hereford Brand in December 1971. Mr. Gillentine sold the Amarillo Plant of Southwest Offset to Morris Communications, parent company of the Amarillo Globe-News papers in 1979. Mr. Gillentine was active in the Panhandle Press Association and had served as president in 1947. He was named to the Panhandle Press Hall of Fame in April at the annual convention in Amarillo. He served as president of the Texas Press Association in 1957-58. He had served on many boards and committees in Hereford and was on the school board and Chamber of Commerce. He was president of the Lions Club in 1943-44. He was a member of the organizing board of the Hereford Country Club. He helped establish an annual Hereford Brand Freshman Scholarship in Journalism at Texas Tech University.
Mr. Gillentine was born in Fort Worth, April 11, 1908. He married Clara Castleberry in in Wellington. She died in 1987. He graduated from Wellington High School in 1926 where he played football and from Southern Methodist University. In his senior year at Southern Methodist University, he published the college newspaper. He was a member of First Baptist Church and Sigma Delta Chi.
Survivors include a son, James M. Gillentine, Jr., of Richardson; a daughter, Sara Durham of Sacramento, CA and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Gillentine and by a sister, Elizabeth Gillentine.

Clara C. Gillentine, 74, died Sunday, March 8, 1987. She grew up in Wellington. She had lived in Hereford since 1939, when she and her husband, James M. Gillentine, bought The Hereford Brand. She was a former teacher in the Wellington schools.
In Hereford, Mrs. Gillentine was active in civic and community life and a special concern for her over a period of years was the Day Care Center, which has grown to two centers. She was personally involved in much of the work of that center and in the fund drives which made them possible. She was also a member, and later chairman of the board of the Camp Fire Girls. These, and other work she did for her community, were in part responsible for her selection as the first Woman of the Year in Hereford, selected by the women's division of the Chamber of Commerce. Mrs. Gillentine was a member of First Baptist Church, Hereford, and a long-time teacher in its Sunday School.
Mrs. Gillentine was born at Dodson June 6, 1912, the daughter of the late J.B. and Bennie Bobo Castleberry. Her father had established a bank in Dodson. She grew up in Wellington, while she was in Wellington High School, that building burned, and she graduated from high school in Ft. Worth, where she lived with an aunt. She received her degree from C.I.A. (the College of Industrial Arts), which is now Texas Woman's University, Denton. She also attended Texas Christian University and took graduate courses from Northwestern University in Chicago.
She is survived by her husband, James M. Gillentine; a daughter, Sarah Durham of Amarillo; a son, James M. Gillentine II, of Dallas; a brother, Bobo Castleberry of Wellington, and 7 grandchildren.
