*Obituary Earnest Lee Langley, Jr.
Earnest Lee Langley, 74, longtime Hereford attorney and civic leader, died Tuesday afternoon at Hereford Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in First United Methodist Church with Dr. Clifford Trotter of Texas Methodist Foundation officiating. Burial will be in West Park Cemetery by Gililland-Watson Funeral Home.
Hereford City Hall will be closed from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday in memory of the former city attorney.
Mr. Langley moved to Hereford from Amarillo in 1952 to join the James W. Witherspoon law firm. He served as the City of Hereford attorney for almost 40 years and was the longtime general counsel for Deaf Smith Electric Cooperative and King's Manor. He was also a longtime director of First National Bank.
Mr. Langley was named Hereford's Citizen of the Year in 1969. He had served as president of numerous local organizations, including the Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Camp Fire Council, Hereford Country Club, and the District Bar Association.
He was one of the founding trustees of King's Manor. He was very active in the Methodist Church, having held positions of leadership at the local, district and conference level. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and the Oasis Shrine.
Mr. Langley was born in Sweetwater in 1920. He met Helen Richter when the two were freshmen at Texas Tech. She was born in Marble Falls and had moved to Abernathy at an early age. They married Dec. 28, 1941 at Abernathy. Mr. Langley served four years in the U.S. Army, rising from private to major, and he was a company commander in Gen. George Patton's Third Army. He was awarded five Battle Stars.
All four of his daughters were educated in Hereford schools and all are graduates of Texas Tech.
Numerous professional rewards and honors were accorded Mr. Langely. He attended Texas Tech University and graduated at the top of his class from the University of Texas Law School in 1951. During his years of practice, he had served on several committees of the State Bar of Texas and is Charter Life Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation, as well as a Fellow of the American College of Probate Counsel.
He had been admitted to practice before the courts of Texas, the U.S. Federal Courts for the Northern and Western Districts of Texas, the Courts of Appeal for the Fifth and Tenth Circuit, the Court of Claim and the Tax Court, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
Survivors include his wife, four daughters; Suzanne Wall of Fort Worth, Barbara Dorff of Gainesville, Camille Sproule of Omak, Wash., and Carolyn Darden of Shallowater; two sisters, Dorothy Green of Plano and Jean Casey of Pflugerville; a brother, Dr. Billy Langley of Houston; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The family will be at 502 Star and requests memorials be to First United Methodist Church.

*Obituary Helen Richter Langley
HEREFORD-On the evening of June 12, 2015, Helen passed away peacefully in her sleep of natural causes. Helen was 95 years old. A Memorial Celebration of Life Service will be held at the First United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 16, 2015. Helen will be interred at the West Park Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Hereford Heritage Funeral Home, 411 E. 6th St. Helen Richter Langley was born in Marble Falls, Texas, on Feb. 25, 1920. Helen married Earnest Lee Langley, Jr. on Dec. 28, 1941. Helen is survived by her brother, Hugo; daughters, Suzanne, Barbara, Camille, and Carolyn. She has ten grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the First United Methodist Church of Hereford or Kings Manor Methodist Retirement System.
