Virgil Marsh, longtime area farmer, cattleman, dies at 72

Virgil F. Marsh, 72, longtime prominent farmer and cattleman, died Monday.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First United Methodist Church with Dr. Ed Williamson, pastor, and Shirley Garrison officiating. Burial will follow in West Park Cemetery by Gililland-Watson Funeral Home.

Mr. Marsh was a past president of Deaf Smith County Chamber of Commerce (1970) and had been awarded a lifetime membership. He was a past president of the Texas-New Mexico Sugar Beet Growers Association, serving on the board for many years. He served on the board of the Texas Cattle Feeders Association, and had been active in Texas Soil & Water Conservation District activities. He was a past president of the Whiteface Booster Club (1972-73).

Mr. Marsh was born in Phoenix June 28, 1922. He graduated from the University of Arizona, where he was captain of the football team his senior year. He received the Governor's Award as the most valuable college player in Arizona in 1948. He married Thelma Parker in 1949 at Las Cruces, N.M.

He coached football at his former high school in Phoenix and at New Mexico State University. He started farming in the Phoenix area in 1951.

He moved to Deaf Smith County in 1953, farming in the north part of the county. He was a veteran, serving in the Army during World War II. He was a member of the Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma; two daughters, Sheryl Sargent of Hereford and Kima Light of El Paso; one son, James O. Marsh of Hereford; two sisters, Bernice Kidd of Pearce, Az., Bettie Jo Roach of Glendale, Az.; a half-sister, Lois Jean Daniels of Phoenix, Az.; and five grandsons.

The family requests memorials to King's Manor of the 4-H Scholarship Endowment Fund.

HEREFORD - Thelma Marsh, 84, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in First United Methodist Church of Hereford with Dr. Tom Fuller officiating. Private family burial will take place. Arrangements are by Parkside Chapel Funeral Home of Hereford.

Miss Marsh was born Nov. 17, 1917, in Post, the daughter of James and Eula Parker. She married Virgil Marsh on May 26, 1949, in Las Cruces, N.M. She graduated from West Texas State University with a degree in education.

She taught school at New Mexico State University. She was very active as a leader and board member of the Campfire Girls, a charter board member of the Hereford Day Care Center, a member of various women's golfing associations and a member of First United Methodist Church of Hereford.

She was preceded in death by her husband; and a sister.

Survivors include a son, Jim Marsh and wife, Karen, of Hereford; two daughters, Sherri Sargent and husband, Tom, of Hereford and Kima Light and husband, Jim, of El Paso; a sister, Eula May Jones of Topeka, Kan.; and five grandsons.

The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, memorials be to the Hereford Senior Citizens Meals on Wheels, 426 Ranger St., Hereford, TX 79045; Crown of Texas Hospice, 1000 S. Jefferson, Amarillo, TX 79101; or to a charity of choice.
