*Obituary Vela “Billie” Gray McDowell
HEREFORD - Billie McDowell, 82, died Tuesday, June 23, 2009.
Celebration of life services will be at 10 a.m. today in Parkside Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Ken Varner, pastor of West Way Baptist Church, and the Rev. Joe Shultz, chaplain of King's Manor Methodist Retirement Home, officiating. Burial will be in West Park Cemetery.
Mrs. McDowell was born March 2, 1927, in Howland, the daughter of Sam and Cora Gray. She married William "Bill" McDowell on Sept. 1, 1946, in Roxton, and they moved to Hereford in 1954. Billie was a secretary for Hereford Independent School District for more than 20 years, having worked at Old Central School, West Central School, Stanton Junior High School and Hereford High School. She was a member of West Way Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, five brothers, a sister and a grandson.
Survivors include three daughters, Jo Anne Frost, Kathi Stone and Kristi McDowell, all of Hereford; four brothers-in-law, Aubrey McDowell of Canyon, Forrest McDowell of St. Augustine, Scott McDowell of Amarillo and Glenn McDowell of Mount Pleasant; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Helmes of Roxton; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to Samaritan Hospice, 426 N. Main St., Suite E, Hereford, TX 79045.
