WESLACO,TX. — Russell Vernon Dargel
Age 90, passed away Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at John Knox Medical Center. He was born May 6, 1919 in Sparta, Wisconsin. His family moved to Donna when he was 3 years old. He is best known as the founder of Dargel Boat Works of Donna. Among 70 years of creating fine Dargel boats, he originated the Dargel flatbottom scooter, the most sought after shallow water boat for the Lower Laguna Madre.
He was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Donna, where he served as a deacon then at the 1st Baptist Church in Weslaco where he remained as an active member until his death.
He was a long time member of the Lions Club having served as a past president. He was always active as the barbecue crew chief and could be found at 4:00 A.M. lighting fires the day of the event. He also helped his fellow Rotarians in Donna by spear heading the fishing crew that provided the fried fish for the Rotarian Fish Fry. He was a founding member of the Valley Sportsman Club and Gulf Coast Conservation Association (now known as GCA). He also helped his fellow fishermen in having a much better time on the water.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Nell Dargel of Weslaco; son Russell Dargel, Jr. of Weslaco; daughters, Debra Morton of McAllen, and Mary Jo Pickett of Mesquite. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren: Corey Dargel, Aaron Dargel, Megan Rhoden, Christopher Pickett, Bethany Crawford and Caitlin Pickett.
Visitation will be held tonight, Friday, April 16, 2010 at 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at McCaleb Funeral Home. The funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, April 17, 2010 at McCaleb Funeral Home chapel officiating the service will be Rev. Steve Parker, Pastor of First Baptist Church of Weslaco. Pallbearers will be fellow deacons and friends from his church. Interment will follow at Donna City Cemetery, Donna, TX. Arrangements by McCaleb Funeral Home, 900 West Fourth Street, Weslaco, TX.

Nelle Griffin Dargel, 95, passed away Sunday, August 17, 2014, at John Knox Village, Personal Care. She was born in Mobile, Alabama February 11, 1919. Her family moved to Weslaco when she was about six years old. She married Russel Dargel in 1943, who preceded her in death four years ago.
Mrs. Dargel taught school for 36 years, beginning at the age of 19 with an emergency certification, before finishing her Education degree from Baylor University in 1951.
She taught Sunday School even longer than that-first at First Baptist Church in Donna, then at First Baptist Church in Weslaco where she had worshipped as a child. One of Mrs. Dargel's favorite Bible verses was "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path."-Proverbs 3:5,6. Such a path was an example of her faith to her friends, students, and loved ones.
Nell Dargel is survived by her brother, her son, two daughters. She leaves six grandchildren. She also leaves five great-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 20, 2014. The funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday morning at McCaleb Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating the service will be Dr. Steve Parker, pastor of First Baptist Church in Weslaco. Interment will follow at Donna City Cemetery, Donna, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
