A.H. Owen Rites Are Held Today
Funeral services were held this morning at 10 o'clock for Albert H. Owen at the First Baptist Church with Rev. W.E. Barnes officiating. Interment was made in West Park Cemetery.
Mr. Owen, 89-year-old former resident of Hereford, died Tuesday at the home of a son, Frank Owen, in Oklahoma City, Okla. His health had been poor for two years.
Survivors include four sons, Frank Owen, Dee Owen of Oklahoma City, Rev. Hope Owen of Albuquerque, N.M., and G.P. Owen of Hereford; five daughters, Mrs. O.R. Tipps of Wichita Falls, Miss Dot Owen of Albuqurque [sic], Mrs. J.B. Harlin, Mrs. Reber Howton, and Mrs. Jack Roberson, who live here, and Mrs. Pearl Bilbrey of Haly.
Mr. Owen first came to the Plains in 1911 and settled in the Wyche community. In 1913 he moved into Hereford and operated a bakery here before moving to Tulia and operating a bakery there. From there he moved to Chickasha, Okla., where he operated a grocery store. He then moved back to Hereford in 1932 and lived here until he went to make his home with his son at Oklahoma City. His wife died in 1934.
Mr. Owen had been a member of the Baptist Church for 75 years, and was a deacon for 50 years. Pallbearers were the grandsons, flower girls were the granddaughters, and Honorary Pallbearers were the Deacons of the church.
Also surviving are 46 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, one brother, Walter G. Owen of Levelland, and a host of nephews and nieces.
Out-of-town relatives here for the services included Mr. and Mrs. Frank Owen and Dee Owen, Mrs. O.R. Tipps, Rev. and Mrs. A. Hope Owen, and Bruce, Kipp, Eugene and Frances; Mrs. Walter Owen of Chickasha, Mrs. Mary Jo Ridling, Chickasha, and Misses Jeanette Betty June and Wiladean; Mrs. Gerald Wilson of Amarillo, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Daniels, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Daniels, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Daniels of Meadow, and Mrs. and Mrs. Wayne Daniels of Brownfield, Albert Owen, Denver, Colo., Bob and Charlie Owen of Vernon.
Friends from out of town included John Gilvan, Mrs. Ritchey of Amarillo, Beth Gettys of Chickasha, Mr. and Mrs. Clem Duggan of Canyon, Mrs. Jack Brazil, Mrs. Cecil Brawley, Mrs. Dave Dandridge, Miss Thelma Thompson all of Quanah, and Mrs. C.J. Lyons of Childress.

Mrs. Harriett Josephine Owen, wife of A.H. Owen and a resident of Deaf Smith county almost continuously since 1913, died Christmas afternoon at her home. She was 77 years old and had been ill for some time.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Baptist church. Rev. B.N. Shepard, pastor, spoke the last rites. Pallbearers were Charles Lee Wilson, H.D. Allman, Jeff Roberson, Earl Wilson, Miles Roberson and A.O. Thompson. Burial was in West Park Cemetery.
A great number of friends and relatives paid last tribute at the church. There was music by the choir and songs by Mrs. Audrey Thompson and Mrs. Calla Mounts.
Harriett Josephine McAllister was born in Arkansas March 7, 1857. She was married to A.H. Owen at Western Grove, Arkansas, October 18, 1875. To them were born 14 children, 11 of whom are still living. There were six boys and eight girls.
The girls still living are Mrs. Reber Howton, Mrs. J.B. Harlin, Mrs. Jack Roberson and Miss Dot Owen, all of Hereford; Mrs. Tom Bilbrey, Forreston, Texas, and Mrs. O.R. Tipps, Wichita Falls.
The sons are Walter, Chickasha, Oklahoma; Frank, of Oklahoma City; Gleaves, Hereford; Hope, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Dee, of Seminole, Oklahoma. Joe was killed in action in the Argonne Forest during the war.
Forty-five living grand children and 14 great grand children are also living.
Mrs. Owen had been a member of the Baptist church and had been devout in her worship more than half a century.
It was in 1885 the Owen family moved to Texas, settling in Collin county. In 1913 they came to Deaf Smith county, living here until 1922, when Mr. and Mrs. Owen and Dot went to Chickasha, Oklahoma, living there until returning here in 1933.
All the living children excepting Mrs. Bilbrey, were here at the time of Mrs. Owen's death. Other relatives at the funeral were a brother-in-law, Henry Daniels, and his three sons, Wayne, Frank and Virgil, with their families, from Meadow, Texas; Mrs. Art Manjeot, a grand daughter, of Elida, New Mexico; W.G. Owen, only brother of Mr. Owen, from Vernon; O.R. Tipps of Wichita Falls; Mrs. T.D. Owen of Seminole, and Mrs. Hope Owen of Santa Fe.
