CLARENDON - Gladys Daly Metcalf Sawyer, 101, died Wednesday, April 22, 2009.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Terry Lowe, pastor, officiating. Graveside services will be in West Park Cemetery in Hereford with Chuck Daly, great-nephew, officiating. Arrangements are by Robertson Funeral Directors of Clarendon.

Gladys was born Feb. 16, 1908, to John Charles and Fanny Jones Daly in an adobe house near Fort Lowell and Tucson, before Arizona was a state. She spent most of her "growing up" years in Tucson. She graduated from high school in 1926 in Manhattan, Kan. At age 19, she moved to Texas and lived in Hereford for many years. In 1956, she married Forrest Sawyer of Donley County, near Clarendon, where she spent the rest of her life. She was an active Methodist Churchmember and also participated in Clarendon's civic clubs. She was the Clarendon Chamber of Commerce 2003 Pioneer Woman of the Year. Her favorite hobbies were gardening and baking, and she was known for her homemade bread, which she loved to share with her family and friends. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Earnest Metcalf, in 1951; her second husband, Forrest Sawyer, in 1994; her parents; two brothers, Walter and Paul Daly; a stepdaughter, Marilyn McQueen; and a stepson, Edward Sawyer.

Survivors include three stepgrandsons, Dan Sawyer of Clarendon, Ted Sawyer of Amarillo and Geff McQueen of Laguna Beach, Calif.; four stepgreat-grandchildren; five stepgreat-great-grandchildren; two nephews; a niece; great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and a daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Sawyer Craft.

The family suggests memorials be to First United Methodist Church in Clarendon.
