Stagner Rites Held Tuesday At Avenue Baptist

Mrs. Joe A. Stagner, pioneer resident of Deaf Smith county, died Saturday, March 22 at 7:10 p.m. in the Deaf Smith county hospital. She was 70 years of age.

Mrs. Stagner, who had been ill for some time, underwent emergency surgery earlier in the day.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 from the Avenue Baptist church in Hereford, of which she was a member. Her nephew, Rev. Kenneth Mullins, pastor of Worth Heights Baptist church in Fort Worth, conducted the services. He was assisted by Rev. H.V. Fields, pastor of the Avenue Baptist church, and Rev. R.H. Cagle, pastor of the First Baptist church in Hereford.

Mrs. Stagner's grandsons served as pallbearers.

Bob Lawrence was in charge of the music. Burial was in the West Park cemetery under the direction of the Gililland Funeral home.

The deceased was born Jennie Lee Easter in Hill county, Texas, on April 29, 1882. She received her schooling at Itasca, Texas.

On December 17, 1899, she was united in marriage with Joe A. Stagner at Itasca. The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1949. Four sons and four daughters were born to this union.

They lived in the Frio and Easter communities for 1905, when they came to Deaf Smith county, until 1929. From 1929 until 1939, they farmed south of Flass in Castro County. They moved to Hereford in 1939 and have lived here ever since. The Stagner home was at 305 Lawton St.

A Gold Star mother, Mrs. Stagner had a son, Pat, who died as a prisoner of war of the Japanese in the Cabanatuan prison camp in the Philippines.

Survivors include her husband, Joe A. Stagner, and the following sons and daughters:

Mrs. Wayne Lawrence, Mrs. G.P. Owen and Miss Della Stagner of Hereford and Mrs. Earl Clark of Booker; Joe Price Stagner, serving with the U.S. army in Korea and Owen and Earl Stagner of Hereford and Fred Stagner of San Francisco. Fourteen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one brother, Walter Easter of Hereford, also surviving.

Mrs. Stagner's son, W/O Joe P. Stagner, is enroute home from Korea. Attempts by him to reach members of the family by telephone from Japan on Monday night were unsuccessful.
