HEREFORD - Arthur M. "Art" Stoy, 77, died Sunday, March 30, 1997.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Keith Boutwell, chaplain at Baptist St. Anthony's Hospice, and Dr. Tom Fuller of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in West Park Cemetery by Gilliland-Watson Funeral Home.

Mr. Stoy was born in Terrell. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

He moved to Deaf Smith County in 1956 from Moriarty, N.M. He graduated from Texas Technological College with a bachelor of science degree. He did his postgraduate work in agronomy. He was a member of the first crop-judging team of Tech and won international recognition.

He was a seedsman for Garrison Seed and a member of First United Methodist Church, where he had taught the Homebuilders Sunday School class for 40 years.

Mr. Stoy was a past president and honorary lifetime member of the Texas Seed Trade Association. He was an honorary lifetime member of the New Mexico Seed Trade Association.

He was a past president and coach of the Hereford Little League and Pony League Associations. He was an assistant scout master and a member of the Amarillo Council of Boy Scouts. He was a past president of the Hereford Golden K and a supporter of George Warner Day Care Center and Big Brothers and Big Sisters.

Mr. Stoy served on the Agricultural Committee of the Hereford Chamber of Commerce. He made the selection for the first pure strain of German Foxtail Millet, Strain R, helping lobby for and getting passed House Bill 1002.


He married Mary Martin in 1945 at Eutawville, S.C.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Tommy Stoy of Stratford and John Stoy of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; two daughters, Mary Johnson of Amarillo and Patricia Spencer of Wayzata, Minn.; four sisters, Jessie Roberts of Benjamin, Lucille Minas and Lorraine Parks, both of Wichita Falls, and Polly Floyd of Houston; and seven grandchildren.

The family requests memorials be to Baptist St. Anthony's Hospice and Life Enrichment Center of Amarillo or First United Methodist Church of Hereford.

HEREFORD - Mary Elizabeth Stoy, 92, of Hereford died Saturday, July 4, 2015.

Celebration of Life services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First United Methodist Church in Hereford with the Rev. Kevin Bushart, pastor, officiating. Burial will following in West Park Cemetery. Arrangements are by Hereford Heritage Funeral Home of Hereford.

Mrs. Stoy was born in 1923 in Varnville, S.C. She married Art Stoy in December 1945 in South Carolina, and then moved to Texas, settling in Hereford in 1955.

Survivors include her children, Patricia Ann Spencer of Wyzata, Minn., Mary Arthur Johnson of Hereford, Thomas Agnew Stoy of Stratford and John Fredrick Stoy of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; a sister, Caroline Couch of Moncks Corner, S.C.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to King’s Manor Methodist Retirement Center, 400 Ranger Drive, Hereford, TX 79045 or First United Methodist Church, 501 Main St., Hereford, TX 79045.
