Mrs. French Thurmond
One of the saddest deaths in years in Hereford occurred Tuesday when Mrs. Vera Thurmond, wife of French Thurmond, and mother of ten children, passed away at her home here. Mrs. Thurmond was conscious up to the last and made a gallant fight for her life, but medical skill and her own determination were without avail.
Funeral services were held from the First Baptist church at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 25, the Rev. V.M. Cloyd officiating, assisted by the Rev. J.W. Boultinghouse, of the Christian church. The body was laid to rest in the Hereford cemetery.
Mrs. Thurmond's maiden name was Vera Hill and she was born in Tennessee in July, 1885. She was married to Mr. Thurmond at Frisco, Collin county, Texas, February 8, 1905. They afterwards moved to Friona and came to Hereford to make their home in 1918. Besides her husband she is survived by ten children, Mrs. Leah Manjeot, Los Angeles; Mrs. Frank Carl, Hereford; Taylor, Tolivar, W.F., Jr., Misses Willie, Margie and Lelia, and twin babies, Wendell, a boy, and Lyndell, a girl, all at home. In addition, Mrs. Thurmond leaves four brothers, O.G., T.A., J.B. and A.O. Hill, all of Hereford, except A.O. Hill, who lives in Los Angeles; two nephews, Earl Porter, Memphis, Tenn., and Lem Porter, Hereford, and one niece, Mrs. Maxie Armer of Houston. Mrs. Manjeot of Los Angeles arrived in Hereford Wednesday night.
Mrs. Thurmond was converted and joined the Baptist church at the age of thirteen, but after moving to Hereford became a member of the Christian denomination. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved family in their great loss.
