*Obituary J. R. (Monk) Bennett, Jr.
J. R. Bennett Jr. departed this world on December 29, 2010 at his residence in Coahoma, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday December 31, 2010 at Midway Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Binix officiating. Interment will follow at the Coahoma Cemetery.

J. R. was born to James Roy and Faytie Bennett June 22, 1923. He lived all his life in Howard County and had 13 siblings. J. R. accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior as a young teenager. He was baptized in Vincent, Texas in the Appleton stock tank.

J. R. served during WW II from 1941-1945. He was drafted before the United States entered the war. The allotment he received helped his family back home. J. R. was one of nine of his platoon of 260 that survived the Normandy invasion. He carried over his shoulder his wounded Commander several miles to reach the Red Cross Station. He was wounded twice having one bullet still in his body at time of his death. J. R. was one of the top 25 most decorated soldiers of the war. He received 2 Purple Hearts and 1 Bronze Star among his honors.

J. R. met his sweetheart Jessie Evaline McGettes at a picnic held at the Big Spring Park in Big Spring, Texas. They married at East Fourth Street Baptist Church in Big Spring on February 12, 1944 while J. R. was on furlough. J. R. worked for the Texas and Pacific Railroad for 42 years. During this time he also farmed and ranched. He continued to ranch and farm until his death. J. R. was very proud of his service to his country and loved his family dearly.

J. R. Bennett is survived by his daughter Ann Lindsey and husband John of Big Spring; his son Larry Bennett and wife Patricia of Coahoma and son Lee Bennett and wife Betty of Sand Springs; grandchildren: Johnny Jay Lindsey; Sonya Vick; Justin Lindsey; Christy Wright; Brett Bennett; Melissa Inman; Tammy Granger; Amy Wagner and Jay Chaldwell; great-grandchildren: Austin Lindsey; Erika Lindsey; Erin Elliott; Shannon Vick; Kayley Wright; Kaitlyn Wright; Brylie Bennett; Tinley Bennett; Megan Inman; Caleb Inman; Wesley Granger; Tyler Granger; Jacob Granger; Carly Granger; Jamison Garriote; Blake Wagner; Logan Wagner and Peyton Wagner. Sisters: Mildred Shortes; Betty Berttran; and Patsy Baird; Brothers: Gerald Bennett; Bill Bennett; William Ray Bennett; and Eugene (Bo) Bennett.

J. R. was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 63 years Jessie; brothers: Jack Bennett; and Omar Bennett; Sisters: Adaline Skeen; Arlene McMurtry; Faye Jean Tarbet and Peggy Allen.

Jessie McGettes Bennett, 83, of Coahoma, died Saturday, Jan 13, 2007, at her residence. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan 16, 2007 at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. Jim Binnix, pastor of Midway Baptist Church officiating and Russ Mullins of the Church of Christ assisting. Interment will follow at the Coahoma Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

She was born Sept 21, 1923, in Howard County and married J. R. Bennett, Jr. on Feb 12, 1945, in Big Spring. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Coahoma.

Survivors include her husband, J.R. Bennett, Jr. of Coahoma; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Patricia Bennett and Lee and Betty Bennett all of Big Spring; one daughter and son-in-law, Ann and John Lindsey of Andrews; grandchildren, Johnny Lindsey and wife, Jana, Justin Lindsey, Sonya Vick and husband, David, Christy Wright and husband, Marshall, Brett Bennett, Melissa Inman and husband, Anthony, Tammy Granger and husband, Keith, Amy Wagner and husband, Tim, and Jay Chadwell; and fifteen great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister.

Pallbearers will be Johnny Lindsey, Anthony Inman, Marshall Wright, Brett Bennett, Justin Lindsey, R.L. Coates, Jay Chadwell, and Austen Lindsey. Honorary pallbearers will be all T & P Railroad employees, Ross Roberts, Randall Reid, Donnie Reid, Charles Porch, Don Crittenton and Wendell Shives.

The family suggests memorials be made to Home Hospice, 111 e. Seventh, Suite, Big Spring 79720 or Best Home Care, 111 E. Seventh, Big Spring 79720. Arrangements under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
