Velma Ruthe (Nurse) Wood 86 of Coahoma, Texas died Friday November 09, 2012 in a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday November 12, 2012 at the First Baptist Church of Coahoma. Interment will follow at Coahoma Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home.
She was born September 23, 1926 in Coahoma, Texas and married Roney Lathan Wood May 26, 1946 in Coahoma, Texas. He preceded her in death October 27, 1989.
A lifelong resident of Coahoma Velma was a registered nurse working at Malone & Hogan for 10 years and was the school nurse at Coahoma ISD for 23 years. She played piano for 77 years starting at age 6 and had taught piano for 48 years. She enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved cooking for her family and enjoyed crocheting hangers. Velma was a member of the First Baptist Church of Coahoma and had taught Sunday School. She enjoyed visiting the sick and doing missionary work.
Survivors include two sons Roney L. Wood Jr of Haltom City and Norman R. Wood and wife Mary of League City; one daughter Nancy Ruthe Doss and husband Joe of Amarillo; a granddaughter raised as her own Suzanna Dean Wells and husband Jarod of Coahoma; three sisters: Margie Hill and husband Bobby and Darla Swindell and husband Johnny all of Big Spring and Katherine Roberts and husband Clayton of Odessa; one brother Fred Woodson of California; four grandchildren: Keith Wood, Kristie Wood, Karrie Wood and Justin Doss; and three great-grandchildren: Hannah Wells, Landon Wells and Trinity Lugo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son Milton "Dean" Wood; four brothers: Walter Woodson, Paul Woodson, Futhie Woodson and Murphy Woodson; and a sister Freddye Britton.
Arrangements under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
