Funeral services for Jose B. Zapata, 87, of Lubbock, will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009, at Guajardo Funeral Chapels with Pastor Juan Buentello officiating and Rev. Basilio Mojica assisting.

Evening service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, at Guajardo Funeral Chapels. Burial will be at City of Lubbock Cemetery also under the direction of Guajardo Funeral Chapels.

He went home to be with the Lord on Jan. 11, 2009, at University Medical Center. Mr. Zapata was born on June 11, 1921, to Candelario and Canuta Benavidez Zapata in Beeville, Texas. He married Hortencia Vidaurre in 1943, in Beeville. She died on April 10, 1991.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jose Zapata, Jr., on Dec. 24, 1968; three brothers; and three sisters.

Mr. Zapata was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great grandfather. He was a member of Templo Monte Carmelo Pentecostal Church and he was retired from Rainbow Bakery.

Survivors include four daughters, Josie (Julian Sr.) Valdez, Maria Zapata, Isabel Zapata, Esmeralda Zapata (Frank Lozoya); step-daughter, Lupe Garcia; 14 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren; 44 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
