Dora Elia Dunn, age 77, lost her fight against Kahler's Disease on Sunday, January 6, 2019, at Scenic Mountain Medical Hospital.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, January 10, 2019, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Rose Dunn officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2019, at the funeral home.

She was born February 26, 1941, in Abasolo, Coahuila, Mexico, to Pablo Santana Rendon and Antonia Flores Ruiz. As a young girl, Dora and her sisters would sell homemade meals to help support their family. Dora would daydream about a life in the United States, and was determined to find a way to get there. She found a name and address of an American man in the magazine "Confidencias" that interested her. After many letters, Omer Lee Dunn Sr., a retired Navy man of 30 years, traveled to Mexico to meet his foreseeable bride. On August 6, 1959, Dora and Omer were married and moved to a tiny rural community by the name of Lewisburg, Kentucky. Eighteen years later, Omer would precede Dora in death. A little over a year later, Dora would meet her soulmate, Melvin Leon Sparkman. Their love story was cut short 32 years later when Melvin lost his fight against diabetes.

Left to honor Dora and remember her love is her daughter, Lucero Rosalinda Dunn; three grandchildren, Brodie Lee (Jessica Rios) Dunn, Cherish Crystal Rose Turner (Luis Anthony Vasquez), and Chelsae Ann Dawn Celeste Turner (Jose Luis Vasquez); four great-grandchildren, Jordan Lee Dunn, Timothy Banks, Nyssa Leilani Dunn, and Joe Anthony Nathaniel Vasquez; five sisters; four brothers; and her little pet companion, Pikkee.

Dora was also preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Carlos and David; and her beloved sister, Marcela.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Dora's name to the American Cancer Society, Vicki Stewart, #6 Coachman Circle, Big Spring, Texas, 79720; or in Melvin's name to the Diabetes Research Institute, www.diabetesresearch.org.
Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home and Crematory. Online condolences can be made at www.npwelch.com.
