*Obituary Erma G. Lashbrook Dunne
Erma Geraldine (Lashbrook) Dunne was born May 30, 1926, in Beardstown Illinois, to Jeremiah “Jerry” and Reasie Lashbrook and passed from this life into eternal life on January 4, 2021. Her family moved from Illinois to Palacios, TX where she met private 1st class James A. “Jimmy” Dunne. They were married on June 13th, 1943. Jimmy and Erma settled in Big Spring, TX in 1954 where they would raise their two sons. They were married for 31 years until his passing in 1974.
Upon arrival in Big Spring, Jimmy and Erma joined the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and after many years of faithful service and love, Erma was appointed the first woman elder to have served in that church. She took great pride in the responsibilities of an elder, as well as being actively involved in many ministries, such as CWF. Erma transferred her membership to First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Rowlett in 2018 when she moved to Wylie, TX to be with family. While in Big Spring, she was a devoted volunteer at Isaiah 58 Food Bank for 17 years. In 2013, Erma was awarded Big Spring Chamber of Commerce’s Woman of the Year for her lifetime of contributions to the community.
Erma worked for the VA hospital, until her retirement in 1994. Along with her work at the hospital, the food bank, and the church, she was also a mentor at the West Side Youth Center, a senior Girl Scout troop leader, and a Cub Scout den mother. Erma was a remarkable seamstress who would help anyone who needed her. Also, if she knew you, you better believe that she prayed for you. Erma valued her “bonus” family in Big Spring and always spoke lovingly of Lonnie Prater, Kelly Priebe, and Lynde Thames, as well as Nell Thames, Mattie Norwood, and Mary Palmer.
Erma was preceded in death by her parents Jerry and Reasie, her husband Jimmy, and her 4 sisters: Jeana Lashbrook, Beulah Fiaminghi, Maude Gilchrist, and Betty Arnold. She is survived by her sons: James J. (Sharon) Dunne and Jerry (Karyl) Dunne. She will forever be known as Maw to her grandchildren: Jeren (Courtney) Dunne, Breegan (Doug) Gholson, Logan (Kirby) Cox, and J.J Dunne; as well as her great-grandchildren: Laney Dunne, Kennley and Blynn Gholson, and Raylan Cox. She is also survived by her nephew and niece: Bill (Mary) Gilchrist and Martha (Jerry) McNeill and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.
