Jowili \Mama Jo\ Taylor Etchison went home to be with her Lord and Savior Saturday, August 3, 2013. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.
She was born in Kiowa County, Oklahoma December 26, 1919 to Clyde and Joe Emma Clare Taylor. They moved to Littlefield, Texas when she was 12 years old. She married Waymon Etchison November 15, 1941 in Littlefield. They farmed in Dawson and Glasscock counties. When Waymon retired in 1972 they moved to Big Spring. She belonged to Hillcrest Baptist Church where she was very active in teaching for over 60 years. Bible school was another part of her church activities. She loved her church and the Christian fellowship. She was a member of the Home Demonstration Club for over 50 years and was recognized at the state convention for her services in that organization. She leaves behind a legacy of having a kind and generous heart and an ever present smile as well as being a great wife, a wonderful mother and mother-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother. A loyal friend to all who knew her, she loved to have company in her home and did much home cooking.
She is survived by a son, Taylor D. Etchison; a daughter, Gaylene Gambrel and husband, Dean; a grandaughter, Whitney Sharp and husband, Jason; two grandsons, Brian Etchison and wife, Amy and Clayton Gambrel and wife, Laurie; a granddaughter, Crystal Wu and husband, Danny; step grandchildren, Crystal Medlin and husband, Chad, Melissa Adame and husband, Michael and Chad Sumners and wife, Farrah; 13 great-grandchildren with another due in January 2014. One brother, Norbin Taylor and wife also survive her along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband; mother and father; and a brother, J. W. Taylor. The family suggests memorials be made to Hillcrest Baptist Church, 2000 W. FM 700, Big Spring, Texas 79720 or to The Word at Work, 1400 Wolfin Ave., Amarillo, Texas 79109, Attn: King's Children's Home/Etcison Memorial (King's Children's Home is an orphanage in Belmopan, Belize for physically and sexually abused children).
