*Obituary
After two and a half years of extreme pain and suffering, Gwendolyn Gowens Gentry departed this old world and was gathered into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was born in Tonk Valley, Texas on June 15, 1935 and slipped away on Friday, May 24, 2013, three weeks short of her 78th birthday in Lamesa. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 in the First Baptist Church of Lamesa under the direction of Branon Funeral Home. Officiating the service will be Brother Johnny Hall assisted by Elder Clifford Gowens. A visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, May 27, 2013 at Branon Funeral Home. A private entombment service will be conducted following the service at Lamesa Memorial Park.
Gwen graduated from Lubbock High school in 1953. She then received a B.S. in Home Economics from Texas Tech in 1957. On June 4, 1957, she married Richard Gentry in Lubbock. She died 11 days short of their 56th anniversary. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She invested her time into her family, church and community.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Sylvester and Minnie Bass Gowens; and one grandson, Samuel Richard Gentry. In addition to her husband, she is survived by sons, Van and special friend Jan of Lamesa, TX and Arlan and wife Lisa of Monahans, TX; daughter, Kayla and husband Corey of Longview, TX; six grandchildren, Wes, Cooper and Caleb Gentry, Karley, Connor and Kendra Lindsey; 4 brothers, Bernard Gowens and wife Lynn of Friona, TX, Norman Gowens and wife Tippy of Waco, TX, Clifford Gowens and wife Lenora of Wylie, TX, Jimmie Gowens and wife Sandi of New Deal, TX; sister, Geraldine Gentry and husband Travis of Floydada, TX and special sister-in-law, Ella Mae Gentry of Lubbock. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the First Baptist Church, 801 S 1st, Lamesa, TX, 79331, and designate either the scholarship fund or the Kimberly Skiles Summer Mission Fund.
