Funeral services for Imogene Gillit, 93, of Odessa and formerly of Lamesa and Lubbock, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 30, 2013, at Branon Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Terry Kirkpatrick officiating. Burial will follow in Dawson County Cemetery under the direction of Branon Funeral Home. Imogene passed away on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 in Odessa, TX.
She was born on July 19, 1919 in Bowie County to Luther Hardie and Lola Imogene Carter. She married Archie Earnest Gillit on October 10, 1934 at Ten Mile Baptist Church. He preceded her in death on November 15, 1982. They were married for 48 years. Imogene was a secretary at the Dawson County Senior Citizens Center where she also helped with the Meals On Wheels program. She was a member of the Wayne Avenue Baptist Church in Lubbock.
She is survived by her daughters, Carrol Cornett and husband Carl of Odessa, Edna Peters of Lubbock and Ernie Zimmerman and husband James of Odessa; 11 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren. Imogene is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Archie; sons, William Hardie Gillit and Eddie Joe Gillit; sisters, Rosa Lee Gillit and Rachael Cox; a brother, Luther Carter; son-in-law, Glen Peters and a grandson, Landon Peters.The family suggests memorials be made to the Wayne Avenue Baptist Church, 5505 Wayne Ave., Lubbock, TX, 79414.
