Nadine Lillian (Haynes) Hodnett, 102, of Big Spring, died peacefully at Parkview Nursing Home Wednesday, July 2, 2014.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Friday, July 11, 2014 at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Rev. Frank Hodnett and Rev. Joey Bacon officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
Nadine was born August 17, 1911 in Fluvanna, Texas to Lucetta Haley Haynes and Henry Harrison Haynes.
She graduated from Fluvanna High School and attended Westmoreland College, now Trinity University, in San Antonio.
She taught school at Knott, Texas and Cauble, Texas and had substituted in Big Spring.
On November 24, 1932, she married Merle Francis Hodnett in Carlsbad, New Mexico. He preceded her in death February 25, 1976.
She was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church and the Philathea Sunday School Class.
Nadine was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution for over 50 years and the Texas Home Demonstration Club. She was also a member of the Garden Club of Big Spring and the Retired Teachers Association.
Nadine loved the Lord and was selflessly devoted to her family and church. She was an influence and inspiration to all who knew her. She was an avid reader and expressed herself in writing poetry. Nadine valued education and encouraged her children and grandchildren to obtain a higher education. She enjoyed playing bingo and bunko with friends and working crossword puzzles.
She is survived by one daughter, Helen Karen Madry and husband, Jimmy of Big Spring; one son, Thomas Fredrick Hodnett and wife, Lexie of Mertzon; a daughter-in-law, Edda Hodnett of San Diego, California. She cherished her five grandchildren, Kimberly (Madry) Pollard and husband, Bill of Big Spring, Kenda (Madry) McDonnell and husband, Neil of New Canaan, Connecticut, Lexie Jan (Hodnett) Wiley of San Angelo, Jon Hodnett of McPherson, Kansas and Claes Hodnett and wife, Lamora of Burbank, California, as well her nine great-grandchildren, Erin Pollard, Ryan Pollard, Kyle Knott McDonnell, Michael McDonnell, Ella McDonnell, Acacia Wiley, Shaylan Wiley, Zoe Wiley and Zane Hodnett.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Lucetta Haynes; one son, Haley Lynn Hodnett; three sisters, Alice Cain, Pauline Vaughan and Angie May; and five brothers, Douglas Haynes, Clifford Haynes, Arlis Haynes, J. W. Haynes and Haley Haynes.
The family would like to express thanks and deepest appreciation to Dr. Manish Shroff, Dee and his staff, the staff at Parkview Nursing Home and at Marcy House for their devotion and excellent care given. A special thank you to her caregivers, Sara Garrett, Trine Rodriguez and Carol Raezka. Also, thank you to her Philathea Sunday School Class for their prayers, love and faithful visits for the past 21 years.
Pallbearers will be Jon Hodnett, Claes Hodnett, Bill Pollard, Neil McDonnell, Charles Dunnam and Jimmy Madry.
The family suggests memorials to the Alice B. Haynes Memorial Scholarship Fund at Howard College, 1001 Birdwell Lane, Big Spring, Texas 79720 or to the Philathea Sunday School Class at First United Methodist Church, 400 S. Scurry, Big Spring, Texas 79720.
