Otho Henry, 100, a World War II Veteran and life-long resident of Lamesa, Texas made his transition from life to death at the West Texas VA Hospital in Big Spring, Texas Friday, March 28, 2014. Funeral services will be Thursday, April 3, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Branon Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Andre Gandy and Rev. Cora Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Lamesa Memorial Park under the direction of Branon Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 2, 2014 from 5:00-7:00 p.m.
Otho was born August 24, 1913 in Waelder, Texas to John and Vinnie (Price) Henry. As a 28 year old, Henry enlisted in the United States Army during WWII. He became a Corporal in the Quartermaster Unit, where he drove supply trucks providing fellow soldiers with food and ammunition while stationed in Wyoming. He returned to Lamesa in 1947 and became employed at Vaughan's Chevrolet Dealership as an Auto Mechanic and later retired in the mid-eighties. On August 24, 2013, God bestowed a blessing upon Otho to see his 100th birthday. He expressed, "I never thought I would see this day. God has been good to me." A personal letter acknowledging his 100th birthday and appreciation for serving his country was signed by President Barack Obama.
He leaves to cherish his memory three nieces, Mrs. Teresa Gandy and husband, Rev. Andre Gandy of Sacramento, CA, Mrs. Evelyn Tucker and husband, George of Los Angeles, CA, and Leslie French of Los Cruces, NM; nephews, Tommy Joe French of Hobbs, NM, Adolph Mox French and wife, Bernice of Albuquerque, NM, and Worth French and wife, Verlie of Albuquerque, NM; grand nephew, John Hawkins of Lamesa; cousin, Marie Mithchell of Lamesa; many grand nieces and nephews; relatives, and friends. Otho is preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Clomie Mitchell, and Beatrice French; and one brother, J.D. Henry.
