Obituary Clifford Lee Hudgin
Funeral services for Clifford Lee Hudgin, 80, of Welch, will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Ashmore Baptist Church with Bro. Charles Burnett officiating. Burial will follow in Lamesa Memorial Park under the direction of Branon Funeral Home. Visitation will be held on Monday, Nov. 23, 2009 from 6 until 8 p.m. at Branon Funeral Home.
Clifford was born on Jan. 11, 1929 in Elizabethtown, Ky. to Virginia Ruth Carter and Ralph Adam Hudgin. He graduated from Central High School in Murfreesboro, Tenn. in 1947. He was the second son of three boys and after his father passed away, Mr. and Mrs. George H. Carter took Clifford and George and raised them as their own. Their oldest brother, Harry, was raised by Clarence Hudgin. Working for the steam laundry was his favorite job in high school. Clifford attended college then joined the United States Air Force on June 4, 1948. He served in the Air Force for eight years, where he earned the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was stationed in Amarillo, where he met his soul mate, Iris Liles. They were married on Sept. 12, 1952 in Lamesa at Bro. Thompson's home.
Clifford was deployed to Okinawa, Japan and later returned to Webb Air Force Base in Big Spring, where he finished his enlistment. He and his wife moved to Welch in 1956 and made it their home. To support his wife and child, he worked as a Postal Clerk in Welch and kept books for the Grain Elevator at night. He was promoted to Post Master and retired in 1984. He was a proud member of the American Legion and the American Veteran's Association.
Clifford was a very outgoing man that made many friends. There were no strangers in his house, only friends that he had not met. With a quick smile, you knew you made a friend and you were especially in his inner circle of friends when he gave you a nickname. He believed that the best way to serve God was to show others how a God-fearing man could live a life. He was an example of a Christian man, always giving to charities for the deaf and blind. He had a great sense of humor and loved people. He was a wonderful husband and father and loved animals and his (swallows). Clifford enjoyed the outdoors and shooting with his son, Lance, and friends.
He is survived by his son, Lance Hudgin of Welch; two half sisters, Joy Nelson and husband Lamar of Mindend, La. and Wanda Goodnight of Pasadena, Texas; brothers, Harry Hudgin and wife Rosetta of Rineyville, Ky. and George Hudgin and wife Bev of Arnold, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Clifford was preceded in death by his wife, Iris Hudgin, and his parents.
