*Obituary
Patricia Williams Szmania 04 June 1944 - 15 December 2023. Died after long illness in Austin, Texas. Preceded in death by her parents Mary Josephine (nee Lehman,1986) and Lawrence Michael Williams (1989), sister Lee Williams Rothman (1999), and husband Edmund Paul Szmania (2008). Survived by her children Sara Catherine, Susan Jennifer, and Edmund Mark Szmania, their partners, and two granddaughters. A scholar in the disciplines of British literature, pedagogy, and communication theory with academic achievement at Notre Dame College, Colgate University, and University of Oxford as well as faculty appointments at Lone Star College, her impactful and meaningful teaching career in higher education spanned decades. Remembered by family, friends, and colleagues as an unwavering advocate for equal rights, voter engagement, and investment in public education. Patron of the fine arts, opera, ballet, and symphony plus cinema enthusiast, a favorite day incorporated encouraging blooms from her gardens, preparing handwritten correspondence at her heirloom secretary, enjoying a matinee, and sipping an espresso sporting a lemon curl. She delighted equally in hosting luncheons and teas at her home to celebrate the many special and enduring friendships throughout her lifetime. Following a period of reflection, ashes will be interred during a private ceremony for immediate family. Remembrances suggested to the scholarship established in her honor and administered by the Lone Star College Foundation located at 5000 Research Forest Drive, The Woodlands, Texas 77381.
