Mary Elizabeth Ott, 82, of Kilgore, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, September 5, 2012.
Mary was born July 17, 1930, in Dallas, Texas to James Brennan and Callie Talty Brennan.
She grew up in Talty Texas, attending Saint Martin Catholic School and Forney High School. She graduated from Saint Paul School of Nursing in 1950. Mary, while in nursing school, met William Ott, who was attending Southwestern Medical School, on a double date. William, being captivated by his friend's date, Mary, jumped out of the car and asked Mary out for the following night. Neither dated another after that evening. William and Mary wed on her birthday in 1951.
Mary worked as a nurse while her husband attended medical school and worked in a butcher shop. The young couple with two young children set up their medical practice in Kilgore in 1956. Mary served as her husband's nurse until having their fourth of nine children. While raising nine children, she completed her Master's Degree in Psychiatric Nursing, and continued work on a doctoral degree until she returned to serving as her husband's nurse. Dr. and Mary Ott retired from their medical practice in 1993. She served on the Sabine Valley Mental Health Board of Trustees for ten years and worked as an advocate for the mentally ill much of her adult life.
She is survived by sisters, Bridget Mosley and Nora Cook and husband Fred; her children, Jane Lane and her husband Mark, Bill Ott, Trisha Irving, Jimmy Ott and his wife Debbie, Kathryn Toon and her husband Steve, John Ott and his wife Judith, Laura Nivin and her husband Dr. Steve Nivin and Lynn Heye and her husband LtCol. John Heye; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband Dr. William Ott, infant daughter Mary Kathleen, and daughter Dr. Liz Jodry-Gatons.
