John Mahler Sr was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States about 1857. He married German immigrant Charlotte Wilhemina Abel in Wisconsin Jan. 28, 1864 and shortly thereafter moved to Indianola, Calhoun Co., Texas and became a farmer. They had at least 10 surviving children.
