HEREFORD - J.L. Marcum, 79, died Tuesday, July 13, 2004, in Amarillo.
Mr. Marcum was born June 30, 1925, in Estelline, the son of James Lewis and Safronia Marcum. After graduating from Estelline High School, Mr. Marcum served in the Navy during World War II. Upon his discharge, he attended the Commonwealth Mortuary College in Houston and graduated in 1947 with a funeral directors license. Mr. Marcum owned several funeral homes in Texas and was currently a co-owner of Parkside Chapel Funeral Home in Hereford. He received his 50-year funeral directors pin in 1997. Mr. Marcum was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of both the Scottish and York Rite. He also owned several new car dealerships in the Texas Panhandle and currently owned Marcum Motor Co. of Hereford. Mr. Marcum served as the president of many Chamber of Commerce boards in Texas and was voted "Man of the Year" when he lived in Littlefield. He married Glenda (Dudley) Anderson on June 6, 1981, in Amarillo.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jim; four brothers; and two sisters.
Survivors include his wife; a son, David Anderson and wife, Nicky, of Hereford; a daughter, Shelly Edwards of Amarillo; a granddaughter, Missy Marcum Crawford and husband, Scott, of Lubbock; three grandsons, Mitch Marcum and wife, Karen, of Katy, and Jessie Edwards and Jason Edwards, both of Hereford; four sisters, Maudie DeShazo and Oneita Weatherly and husband, Winfred, all of Amarillo, Lois Reagan of Hobbs, N.M., and Mary Richburg and husband, Lonnie, of Crowley; and seven great-grandchildren.
